The two primary markets in the city of Georgetown were in full swing yesterday as they were allowed to operate within the confines of a six-hour day, despite concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In a visit to Bourda Market, Stabroek News observed crowds in the area as persons were hurrying to purchase essential food items before the market obliged the order of closing at 13:00hrs. One vendor described yesterday’s activities as “business as usual”. He opined that persons have been coming out in their numbers to purchase the items they need in order to be adequately supplied during the nationwide curfew that was instituted just a few days ago.

When asked about the precautionary measures he was taking to avoid contracting the coronavirus, the vendor explained that he tries to sell a few people at a time in order to avoid congestion. “I try as much as possible to tell the customers not to bundle up at one time,” he said, adding, “I tell some to step aside while I sell the others and when I’m done I can deal with [the others].”

Butchers in the market, however, explained to Stabroek News that they are the ones that are “feeling the squeeze” over the past few weeks and especially since the curfew was implemented. “Things real tight for us. People scared to come out and is we feeling the squeeze,” one butcher lamented.

Meanwhile, the Stabroek Market appeared to be a little less congested as there were less vendors in the area. Despite this, persons ensured they purchased the essential items on sale.
