A 36-year-old Lethem resident was arrested yesterday morning after he admitted to smuggling a number of items including forty cases of rum into the country through the illegal Guyana/Brazil border crossing at Mango Grove, Lethem.

The continued use of this illegal crossing poses a severe COVID-19 threat to residents of the community.

According to a police report, ranks acting on information received went to the Mango Grove, Lethem illegal crossing around 4.45am, where they saw the suspect allegedly pushing a quantity of items in a wheel barrow.

Among the items were 40 cases of “black stone” rum, 52 cases of Brazilian beers and four boxes of cosmetics. The items were seized by the police.

Upon noticing the police, some persons who were in the boat which was used to smuggle the items escaped Guyana’s shore to Brazil.

The suspect was subsequently questioned and he reportedly admitted to smuggling the items that came from Bon Fim, Brazil for himself and other persons.
