A family of three was displaced yesterday afternoon after a fire destroyed a Sophia house.

According to Guyana Fire Service (GFS) officials at the scene, the fire started at 3 pm and ripped through the wooden house, located at Lot 197 ‘A’ Field, Sophia, in a matter minutes. The GFS has since launched an investigation into the fire’s origin.

When the fire truck arrived, most of the house had already been destroyed, leaving the homeowner, 51-year-old Suenamay Moseley and her two children in tears.

A distraught Moseley told Sunday Stabroek hat no one was at home when the fire started so no one was hurt, but all their belongings were destroyed. “All my microwave, refrigerator, fan, beds, chair set, everything was destroyed. All my documents and clothes. All my money was lost,” Moseley managed to say through her tears.

She revealed that she spent the duration of the morning inside her home and only left when her cousin called her and told her that she would be taking her to a wedding. She noted that her daughter, Keawana, was spending the day at family in Albouystown, while her son was at work.

Moseley added that before she left the house she made sure everything was okay and nothing seemed to be amiss. “Two and a half hours later I got a call from my neighbour saying how the house was on fire and all of us came but when we reach there was nothing that we could do,” she added.

She disclosed that an electrician who works with Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) told them that it is possible that the fire originated from a meter. “They are saying it is electrical because just before the fire started, the next door neighbor said that there was a fluctuation of current and then because his TV blinked and after that, the fire started,” she added.

Moseley said that she worked in the hinterland and recently returned to Georgetown with the money she earned, all of which was in the house.

“I don’t know where to go and stay right now. I don’t know what to do. My daughter is a student at UG [University of Guyana] [and] everything burn up for she,” the woman stated.
