A Sophia family of four lost their home in a fire on Wednesday morning due to what the Guyana Fire Service says was an illegal electricity connection.

Sehfred McPherson, 31, of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, told Stabroek News that he was at work when he received information about the fire at his home.

He said he was told that the fire started in the kitchen.

He explained that his fiancée, who had left the home to buy meat at a nearby shop, was alerted by the shouts of their children about a fire. The woman rushed back to the house but was unable to save anything.

“When I came here it was already burn down,” McPherson told this newspaper.  Following an investigation, Fire Chief Marlon Gentle yesterday confirmed that the fire was started by “the illegal acquisition of electricity.”

McPherson, who said he lost a great lot, noted that a friend was assisting the family with accommodation. The family lived at their Sophia home for almost a year.

The family can be contacted at 682-0917.
