Cop under close arrest after killing cyclist in Mahaica accident

A policeman has been placed under close arrest after hitting and killing a cyclist at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, in an accident yesterday afternoon.

According to a Guyana Police Force brief, the accident occurred along the Helena No. 2 Public Road at Mahaica around 5.40pm.

As a result, a 51-year-old pedal cyclist, who was identified as Patrick Haley, of Good Hope, Mahaica, died.

The police noted that the driver of the car that struck Haley is a serving member of the force who was placed under close arrest as the investigation proceeds. 

No further details were provided by the police about the accident up to press time.
