Ajana Wilkinson-Iwayemi, a former teacher and air traffic controller, is among Guyanese who lost their lives to COVID-19 in the diaspora earlier this year.

Wilkinson-Iwayemi, 39, who was the former administrator of financial aid at the American Medical University of Antigua, started showing symptoms of the virus sometime in March. She died at a New York hospital on April 20th.

Dolsy Lewis-Wilkinson, the mother of the deceased, told Stabroek News that it was unclear as to when Wilkinson-Iwayemi might have contracted the virus.

However, she disclosed that throughout her battle she developed a loss in appetite, feelings of tiredness, aches and pains and difficulty breathing.

Lewis-Wilkinson stated that after Wilkinson-Iwayemi began feeling sick, she was not allowed to visit, or provide any form of physical care, which as a retired nurse  made her hurt even more as she could not assist in easing some of her daughter’s pain.

She noted that the last time she saw Wilkinson-Iwayemi was when she was taken to the hospital.

While residing in Guyana, Wilkinson-Iwayemi resided at Ogle Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara.

She worked as a teacher at the La Bonne Intention Primary School and later as an air traffic controller at Ogle Airport. She migrated in October of 2001, and later shared a life with her husband, whom she married in February, two months before succumbing to the COVID-19 virus.
