Suspect in La Penitence murder injured in shootout with police

A suspect allegedly involved in the shooting that claimed the life of Navindra Samaroo on July 23, at Middle Road, La Penitence, was on Thursday, shot and apprehended by police ranks.

Commander of Region 4 (a) Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean, in a telephone interview with Stabroek News, said there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect Dwyane Castello and police officers, which resulted in him being shot in his left leg, below the knee.

The shootout took place in Genip Lane, East Ruimveldt, at around 8:30 pm on Thursday.

A search was conducted and Castello was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol and six matching rounds.

While receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, Castello was put under police guard. However, he was  released from the hospital sometime yesterday afternoon and is currently assisting the police with their investigations.

GPH’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chelauna Providence confirmed Castello’s release.

Samaroo, 23, of 59 West La Penitence, Georgetown, was shot and killed in a suspected robbery that took place in broad daylight. A bag that was in his possession was taken during the course of the crime.

When Stabroek News contacted the father of the deceased, he shared that he was happy that the police had arrested the suspect, and expressed the hope that his family would soon see justice done.

The young man’s father had explained that his son left work to run some errands and pick up lunch, and the attack occurred while he was on his way back to work.
