Pedestrian dies after hit by sand truck at Parika

A 43-year-old pedestrian died after he was struck down and ran over by a motor lorry along the Parika Access Road,  East Bank Essequibo (EBE) on Wednesday afternoon.

Dead is Sheik Bacchus also known as  ‘Babbo’ of  Parika-Salem, EBE.

The accident occurred around 1.30pm.

Police yesterday confirmed that the driver of the motor lorry, GYY 7021, who has been identified as a resident of the area is presently  in police custody assisting with the investigation. 

According to a police press release, investigations revealed that Bacchus was walking on the northern side of the access road while the motor lorry which was parked on the southern side of the said road was offloading sand.

“On completion of offloading, the driver drove off and while  in the  process of passing the pedestrian (Bacchus), the left side front collided with the pedestrian which caused him to fall on the northern  parapet,” the statement explained.

The driver was later informed of the accident and he returned to the scene.

Bacchus was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
