GTT gets approval to repair vandalised submarine cable

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) yesterday announced that it has received authorisation to commence underwater repairs to it submarine fiber-optic cable, which it says was damaged a few weeks ago in what is suspected to be a case of sabotage.

According to the company, the repairs are aimed at restoring full telecommunication services to Region Three.

“Having received the necessary approvals from the Maritime Adminis-tration Department (MARAD), divers are scheduled to map the points of the damage and begin splicing, with major works to be completed by Monday,” GTT’s Public Relations Manager Jasmin Harris said in a statement yesterday.

GTT noted that on September 8, suspected sabotage to the fiber-optic cable resulted in the disruption of telecoms services to over 25,000 customers in West Demerara. It said while mobile and internet services were largely restored within 24 hours, several communities are still however without service.

GTT condemned acts of sabotage to its network and encouraged public vigilance to prevent service disruptions that negatively impact a range of customers, including children reliant on telecommunications for their learning.  Persons can report acts of sabotage by calling 0908 or emailing tips@gtt.co.gy.

A $2 million reward has been offered to anyone with information about the specific vandalism of the cable.
