Cop stabbed at BV after trying to make peace

A bid to break up a row between two men on Thursday has landed a policeman in the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) with multiple stab wounds.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said Marcos Richmond, 20, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, received stabbed wounds to his lower back and neck after he attempted to keep the peace between two men.

A GPF statement stated that around 7.40 pm on Thursday, Richmond was walking home from work along Quamina Street, Beterverwagting, where he witnessed the 35-year-old suspect and another man in an altercation.

The statement added that the officer approached the two men in a bid to keep the peace but was told by the suspect that it was none of his concern.

Richmond, police say, then resumed his journey home but the suspect, who was armed with a knife, approached him from behind and attacked him.

He was subsequently rushed to the GPH by a family member and admitted as a patient in a serious but stable condition. The suspect was later arrested.
