Trinidad: ‘Yankee’ killed by cops

(Trinidad Express) A San Fernando man, described by police as a known gang member, was shot and killed in an incident involving law enforcement officers early yesterday morning.

Damien Scoon, also known as “Yankee”, was fatally wounded in the shooting at his Jamadar Street apartment around 4.21 a.m.

Police said a joint team of officers, including members of the Southern Division Task Force and Special Intelligence Unit (SIU), went to the apartment to conduct investigations.

Scoon, police said, was armed with a pistol and refused to hand over the weapon.

According to the report, Scoon pointed the firearm at the officers and threatened to shoot.

The officers responded, hitting Scoon in the abdomen, the Express was told.

Scoon was taken to San Fernando General Hospital in an ambulance.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Express visited the scene but the apartment was locked.

Neighbours said Scoon lived alone.

In December 2019, Scoon was among four people charged with human trafficking and gang-related offences.

They were also charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of cocaine, and possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking
