The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced that it will be hosting meetings with the Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) to discuss strategies to ensure children are engaging during at-home learning.

In a press release issued last week by the Education Ministry, it was stated that Chief Education Officer (CEO), Dr Marcel Hutson had begun meeting with executives attached to the country’s PTAs, to discuss ways in which they can collectively assess whether children are kept engaged in learning while schools remain physically closed. The meetings are being conducted virtually.

According to the MoE, Hutson said that the key objective of the meetings is to bring awareness to the current programmes that are currently being executed by the ministry during the pandemic to benefit learners. A blended approach to educate students was adapted by the ministry in September when schools were reopened online so as to avoid transmission of the novel coronavirus.  Some of these initiatives include programmes being broadcast on the Guyana Learning Channel which is now available in regions and areas where it either had stopped being aired or was never aired before.

Teachers have also been encouraged to use virtual platforms to continue teaching, and print material was made accessible for students to practice at home. Persons can also use the ministry’s website – education.gov.gy – to access worksheets, past papers, textbooks and other resources to assist with learning. Hutson noted that in order for these initiatives to be effective, the PTA’s involvement would be required to ensure that parents understand their responsibilities and the ways in which they can support their children as well as the MoE, the release added.
