Suspect in sleepover death released on bail

The suspect in the death of Rockey Sawh, the 15-year-old who was allegedly accidentally shot in his head, has been released on a $100,000 station bail, Regional Commander of Region 4 ‘A’ Simon Mc Bean disclosed.

In a telephone interview, Mc Bean explained that the suspect, 17, was released on Friday after being detained for the maximum 72 hours period.

The commander said that they have sought legal advice in the interim and were told to continue with the investigation. He noted that investigators are still probing and when completed they will seek further advice.

Sawh,  of David Street, Kitty was said to have been accidentally shot by the suspect, who is a close friend, during a sleepover at Sandy Babb Street, Kitty.

Sawh was shot once in his head during the incident which occurred sometime between 7pm and 8pm on Tuesday.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was admitted as a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Sawh succumbed around 5.30am on Wednesday.

McBean told Stabroek News that the police received a report of the incident around 2 am on Wednesday.

According to McBean, investigations thus far revealed that Sawh and the 17-year-old suspect were present at the suspect’s Sandy Babb Street home, when the suspect allegedly accidentally shot Sawh in his head.

He said the wound was inflicted with a gun belonging to the suspect’s father, who is a licensed firearm holder.

The Guyana Police Force  has reminded licensed firearm holders that safeguarding their weapons when not in use is a priority, while warning that those found in breach of any firearm safety rules would have their weapons licences revoked.
