A fisherman was on Sunday fatally stabbed by his sister at their Parika Backdam home, after she attempted to stop him from assaulting his common-law wife.

Alex Morgow, 20, succumbed shortly after being stabbed in the chest.

His sister, 31-year-old Lasheena Morgow, a farmer of the same address, is currently in custody.

The Guyana Police Force said that the fatal confrontation occurred around 5.30 pm when Lasheena returned home with the wife of the deceased.

In a statement, the Force said the now deceased and his wife had an argument over a meal she prepared for him, which allegedly resulted in him pushing her to the ground and then slapping and kicking her.

Lasheena, the Force added, tried to intervene and questioned the actions of her brother  and subsequently ended up in an argument with the man, who allegedly pushed her.

Lasheena then ran to the kitchen, armed herself with a knife and dealt her brother a stab to the left side of his chest.

The deceased later stumbled outside and fell downstairs.

An alarm was raised and the police were contacted and Lasheena arrested.

The statement explained that a search conducted found the weapon used in the attack in a black and white handbag with what appeared to be bloodstains.

During an interview with Stabroek News, Joyann Atkinson, the wife of the deceased, stated that she and Lasheena had left home around 10 am and headed to the Parika Market to do some shopping. However, on their way back, Atkinson said they stopped at a friend of Lasheena. During the stop, Atkinson said Lasheena had some alcoholic beverages, while she did not.

The woman said about 5.30 pm they returned home, where they found Alex seated on the stairway.

She said he approached her and said “This is the rice wah yuh cook fuh me?”

Atkinson recounted that she replied in the affirmative and Alex continued with the questioning, causing her to ask what was wrong with the rice.

She said she was then asked to feel the rice and she said after touching it she noticed that it felt “lil hard”.

She disclosed that the man was a little angry because of how she cooked the rice and because she came home late from the market.

As a result, Atkinson said, the man shoved her and slapped her. He later pushed her down to the floor, while kicking and cuffing her, she added.

The woman said Lasheena, who appeared to be intoxicated, then came upstairs and questioned Alex, who told her to stay out of his business and that she had no right to intervene in a matter concerning him and his wife.

Atkinson said Lasheena then shoved her brother and stepped up to him to seemingly fight.

She said Alex just pushed Lasheena away and the two continued to argue for some time.

The woman told Stabroek News that Lasheena then said, “Oh you want fight” and ran for a knife from the kitchen, before shoving him out to the veranda as she attempted to close the door.

Alex then pushed the door open and Lasheena stabbed him.

Atkinson recalled the deceased exclaiming “Ow!”

She said she saw blood oozing from the wound and he went down the stairs and fell, hitting his head. He then turned over on his back as Atkinson ran to him and said “Breathe boy, breathe, don’t dead pon meh!”

The woman, who applied pressure to the wound, added that she tried to give the deceased air, to assist with his breathing and stated that he was okay for a minute and opened his eyes, staring up at her. She said he later began trembling as she pleaded with him not to die.

Atkinson believes that it was the alcohol that caused Lasheena to commit the act. She said she and Alex had shared a relationship for close to a year and she described it as normal for a couple that lives together.
