Catholic church should be promoting enforcement of anti-sodomy laws

Dear Editor,

The recent news that the Catholic Bishop actually stated publicly that the anti-sodomy laws in Guyana should be made null and void is the height of irresponsibility, recklessness and hypocrisy. The Catholic church should be promoting the enforcement of such laws. In the recent past a young child was attacked and raped by fellow students in one of our schools, nothing was done by the authorities to bring justice in this case and steps were not taken to prevent it from recurring in other parts of our education system. Guyana is not a place where we can afford to let these laws be eliminated.

The church and other leaders in our society should be calling for the anti-sodomy laws to be enforced. The Catholic Bishop should be apologizing to the Nation for such a reckless statement. Morality in our society has deteriorated over the years and it is time that we have leaders who are willing to reverse this unfortunate trend.

Yours faithfully,
