A police station in Region One was set on fire yesterday morning with several police officers locked inside. However, the lawmen were able to escape and extinguish the fire before the building was severely damaged.

A statement by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) revealed that the attempted arson took place around 2.30 am yesterday morning at the Arakaka Police Station.

Information provided by the Subordinate Officer, who was on duty at that time, revealed that he along with several other officers were performing duties in the enquiries office when they heard a loud explosion. They immediately rushed to see what had happened and saw a huge blaze on the front door of the building.

They subsequently rushed and extinguished the blaze with water. Following the incident, the police statement added, a partly burnt five gallon bottle was found at the front door. They made checks around the building but no one was seen.

No one was injured.

Meanwhile, a source told Stabroek News that the door was padlocked so the police were forced to escape the building via a different entrance. It was disclosed that the perpetrator doused the front door with gas before setting it on fire.

Only the front door of the building was scorched.

Investigations by the GPF and the Guyana Fire Service have since commenced. No arrests were made up to press time.
