Former Mayor of Linden and entrepreneur Stan Smith died at his residence shortly after midday on Wednesday.

Smith, who was 70, had complained of feeling unwell.

A family member, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News that Smith had underlying health conditions and briefly visited a hospital last week before returning home.

Smith had served as the Mayor of Linden from 1996 to 2003 and before his death he held the post of Managing Director for his Jacs Restaurant and Diner business, located in the Mackenzie area.

In a statement, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) extended condolences on the passing of Smith. “His belief in conflict resolution and (welcoming of) views from all who wanted to contribute to the betterment for the living standards of residents in Linden made him a beloved figure in the Linden community,” the party said.
