Dear Editor,
While Xmas is a festive season that represents peace on earth and goodwill to mankind, my sentiments go out to all those who have lost loved ones during the year especially those who were murdered by their spouses in domestic violence. We are still in shock at the senseless murders of so many young women and men, who have so much to offer, but have been cut down in the prime of their lives. No need for a reminder as to how unprecedented is this Xmas season. Research reports have showed that while we have become extremely dependent on text messages and emails to communicate with our family members and close friends, a phone call is more likely to produce the feelings of connectedness that we crave. While unquestionably people feel more connected through voice-based media, there are still elements of fear about awkwardness that are propelling them towards text –based media.
Over the next few days ,we will feel the urge to reconnect with family and friends, an urge that has certainly been strengthened on account of the pandemic-driven social distancing recommendations that make in-person meetings more difficult. While it might be more advantageous to send a text or email, especially a group message, to say Happy Holidays, it will also be unmistakably impersonal. The recipients will give it a quick glance and move on. By the end of the day, it will be largely forgotten.
However, if you set aside a block of time to make a series of phone calls, then undoubtedly the effect will likely endure throughout the remainder of the day and well into the future. Those on the other end of the call will be much more appreciative, and will cherish and remember that you cared enough and that you took the extra time to catch up with them.
Conclusively, this never-happen-before, one-of-a-kind Christmas has left many of us at a loss when it comes to gift giving. This year, a phone call might just be the perfect present. However, do not forget during the phone call to tell those close to you how much you love and appreciate them.
So wherever you are, whatever you choose to do. Have a truly reflective time.
