A Guyanese youth was fatally stabbed in Suriname on Tuesday evening after trying to intervene during a clash between two groups of Guyanese men.

Dead is Norris Dundas Vanderstoop, 20, a fisherman, who relocated from Lot 4 Epsom Village, Corentyne, to Suriname about four years ago.

His brother, Leroy Vanderstoop, a Berbice-based reporter, yesterday said that his family received information that his brother was outside of his apartment in Paramaribo on his phone when a group of men arrived and started to attack another group of men who were standing a short distance away. “My brother actually saw that one of his friend was attacked and he started to run towards his friend and some of the men attacked him also,” he said.

He noted that his brother was stabbed multiple times about his body.

According to Vanderstoop, some persons were arrested, while others escaped.

The family is calling on the Surinamese authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and also on the lawmen in Guyana to assist if possible since the alleged attackers and victims are all Guyanese.

He also called on the authorities in Guyana to be on the alert in case the alleged attackers attempt to return to Guyana to flee prosecution.

Meanwhile, the young man said that the last time they saw his brother was about a year ago.  He noted, that his brother had planned to return to Guyana but was not able to do so due to the COVID-19 lockdown of the country.

He described his brother as a kind-hearted and humble person.
