Bent St clothes vendor shot dead

A 32-year-old clothes vendor was fatally shot on New Year’s night during a confrontation at Commerce Street, Georgetown and the police have since arrested the suspect.

Dead is Paul Anthony Smith, called ‘Blacka,’ of Lot 31 Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.

He was shot once to his back during the confrontation, which took place around 6.30pm.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor confirmed that the 29-year-old suspect, who is also a clothes vendor, was arrested.

The police, in a press statement, said enquiries revealed that Smith was observed holding a cutlass and heading to his car when he was allegedly shot by the suspect.

After being shot, Smith fell on the front passenger seat of his car.

He was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead.

Sunday Stabroek was informed that the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between Smith and the suspect over a female.
