Updated: Gunmen open fire on former residence of Ponzi accused

Gunmen last night opened fire on a property at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara which was said to have once been occupied by alleged Ponzi scheme accused, Yuri Garcia Dominguez.

No one was injured.

According to a police report, enquiries revealed that about 8.50 last night, three unidentified men turned up at Lot 242 Track A Coldingen in a car  (number and make unknown). The men then exited the car and opened fire on the building.

Dominquez no longer resides at the location.

In August of last year, the police had arrested the Dominquez and his wife, Ateeka Ishmael after they had launched an investigation into what is being described as a huge Ponzi scheme.

To date, the principals are facing close to 80 charges of conspiring with other persons to obtain monies by false pretence.  They were released on bail totaling approximately $30 million.

A large number of their clients are owed money.  Various promises to resume payments have encountered hurdles.

Police investigations into last night’s events are ongoing.  

The police today issued the following statement:

Police are investigating an alleged shooting incident which occurred on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 about 20:26 hours on the residence of Aubrey Norton, age 42 years, a Businessman of Track ‘A’ Coldingen, East Coast Demerara by three armed and unidentified male.

Enquiries disclosed that the victim and his wife resides in the upper flat of the building, whilst the lower flat is occupied by Yuri Garcia Dominguez and his family who were not at home at the time of the incident. On the date and time mentioned above the 42 year-old businessman and his wife were home watching television when he heard several loud explosions suspected to be gunshot. As a result, the man and his wife took cover and contacted the police.

Ranks upon arrival, processed the scene and three (3) live 9MM rounds, four (4) 7.62×39 spent shells, eleven (11) 9MM spent shells and fragment suspected to be component of ammunition were found on the street and in the victim’s yard.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV camera installed on the victim’s home.

Investigations ongoing.
