Police are awaiting legal advice on a possible charge over the death of Adiraj Persaud, the man who died last Friday after riding into a minibus at Herstelling Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Police Commander of Region 4 (b) Linden Isles told Stabroek News that the case file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

Persaud, also known as ‘Trini,’ 37, of Herstelling, was riding his bicycle across the road at the time of the accident.

The Guyana Police Force, in a brief statement on the accident, had said that the minibus, driven by an East Ruimveldt resident, was proceeding north along the western lane of the western carriageway of the Herstelling Public Road when it collided with Persaud. It also crashed into a parked truck that was nearby.

Footage of the accident, which was seen by this newspaper, showed Persaud, riding into the path of the minibus, seemingly not having seen it.

Persaud, who landed on the road, suffered a fracture of his skull and his right hand.

He was subsequently picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

A breathalyser test conducted on the 43-year-old minibus driver found no trace of alcohol in his breath.

A friend of Persaud told Stabroek News that the man had been staying with family friends in the area at the time. He was described as a helpful individual.

He will be laid to rest today.
