An autopsy done on the body of Roger Samuel, the inmate who was found dead on Sunday at the Lusignan Prison has ruled his death as a result of gastrointestinal haemorrhaging.

The post-mortem was carried out on Wednesday morning by state pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh. According to the post-mortem, the cause of death was a result of bleeding from gastric ulcers. The report seen by this newspaper stated that Samuel also suffered a fractured limb which has been categorized as a condition that may have contributed to his death but was not related to the disease or the condition causing it.

A press release by the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) had stated that about 6am on Sunday, the officer on duty was in the process of unlocking the prisoners to get washed up when Samuel was discovered lying on his bed motionless. A doctor and the police commander were called to the scene where he was pronounced dead.

Samuel had been remanded to prison over the larceny of a car. He was housed in Unit 1 with several other prisoners at the time of the incident. According to the GPS, Samuel was admitted to the prison on Friday bearing injuries to his body which according to the prison service were inflicted by members of the public when the alleged offence was committed.

The deceased’s mother, Ingrid Subryan had questioned why if her son was injured, was he taken to the prison and had further stated that even after they had arrested Samuel, police should have taken him to seek medical attention.
