Sophia man hospitalized after shot by police

A 28-year-old man was shot whilst attempting to attack a member of a #3 mobile police patrol unit, according to the police.

The incident occurred on Friday January 22, 2021 at 11:00 hrs at Plum Park Dam, Sophia. A police release stated that the 28-year-old man, who is also a resident of Sophia, was observed by the mobile unit acting in a suspicious manner near a roadside shop. The ranks immediately stopped and questioned the individual at which point the man threw a zip lock plastic bag on the ground. The bag contained leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, the police said. The police stated that the man subsequently made good his escape.

However, the ranks proceeded to search for him and, according to the release, the man was seen at the shop where he was approached and informed of the offence. The mobile unit thereafter attempted to arrest him. During the arrest, the man allegedly picked up a glass bottle and attempted to hit the police corporal. The corporal, according to the police, avoided being hit by moving away and outside of the man’s reach. The man then began to use a series of obscene words, whilst proceeding to advance towards the Corporal and threatening him with the bottle.

Even though he was warned to desist, the police say that man refused to follow the police’s instructions and continued to advance towards the corporal. Realizing he was in danger, the corporal discharged a round in his attacker’s direction hitting him in his upper thigh. The release said that police escorted the man to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted. A thorough investigation into the incident is ongoing.
