La Retraite labourer robbed, slashed by muggers

A forty-year-old labourer was on Tuesday night robbed of his cell phone by two suspects, one of whom slashed him under his chin before they escaped.

According to a police report, the victim, John Benjamin, of Old Road, La Retraite, West Bank Demerara, was sitting under a shed on La Retraite Public Road when at about 8.30pm he was approached by two men enquiring whether he knew anyone named “Devon”. Benjamin told the men he didn’t know, after which one of the suspects grabbed him by his neck and snatched his Alcatel phone valued at $27,000 which he had in his hand at the time. During the incident, Benjamin resisted and one of the suspects pulled out a knife, slashing him under his chin.

The suspects made their escape in a silver/grey Toyota Spacio which was waiting nearby.

Benjamin raised an alarm and was subsequently escorted to the Wales Police Station where a report was made. He sought medical attention afterwards at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Investigations are ongoing.
