What about the rest of the population?

Dear Editor,

I could never understand why politicians keep insulting the intelligence of the citizenry with the nonsense that liberally emanates from their mouths. Perhaps we deserve it. After all some of us voted for them.

The minister of health is very proud of the disclosure that Guyana will be getting 104,000  doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine under the Covax arrangement. Worse yet the Chinese are said to be “donating” 20,000 doses of their unproven and ineffective version of a vaccine.

The minister says that this is a “start” though he is short on details as to the middle and end.

Given a population of 800,000 citizens, and knowing that proper vaccination requires 2 doses, 124,000 doses will vaccinate 62,000 citizens. So my questions to the minister are: what happens to the remaining 736,000 citizens? What arrangements have been put in place by this “rich oil producing country” to ensure that they will have some semblance of protection from this virus and all its mutations?

Why is it that we still persist in this habit of mendicancy, begging here and there for a handout when we ought by now to have the money to pay?

I do not expect any intelligent response if at all.

Yours faithfully,
