The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club’s (GMR&SC) Endurance Meet set to roll off tomorrow is expected to reignite the racing spirit across the country.

This is according to the body’s president, Rameez Mohamed who spoke to Stabroek Sport on the eve of the Secure Innovations-sponsored event.

“As you know there wasn’t much racing last year. We had one event at the start of the year then we went into lock down,” said Mohamed.

“I think with hosting this event it will wake up the drivers and teams and owners’ race spirit and create a race hype once again,” Mohamed added.

The racers were originally set to take to the starting line last week but with recent rehabilitation works on the Timehri-based South Dakota Circuit, the surface needed a bit more time to cure.

Taking into consideration the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, the organisers were forced to be creative and will now broadcast the event via GMR&SC’s Facebook page since there will be no in-house attendance.

In keeping with the regulations, Mohamed explained:“I think it will be extremely safe because we are not allowing more than 30 cars on the grid when we normally get 70 to 90 cars…They have to use every other pit, leaving a vacant space in the middle.”

In perspective, Mohamed detailed that the pits are capable of containing over 150 cars and the restrictions will see the teams spaced out adequately.

Additionally, one team will be allowed  two pit crew and drivers with the wearing of masks compulsory.

The Endurance version is a three-hour race made up of four groups for cars grouped by their engine capacity.

These categories are 0-1500cc, 1501-1600cc, 1601-2000cc and 0-1400cc turbo as well as unlimited cars. The goal is to make the most laps in the stipulated time.
