Golf at the Lusignan Golf Club is set to tee off for the first time in nearly a year when the Panko Steel tournament gets underway today.

The competition, which was launched earlier this week at one of the first buildings constructed by the company, Crown Mining at Dennis Street, Campbellville will tee off at 09.00 hours under strict Covid-19 regulations.

The management of the club explained that the tournament is a nine-hole “pairs” format and is expected to feature a lot of parent/child partnerships as they vie for the top spot.

Club Captain, Patrick Prashad related, “It has a format whereby it’s called a pair nine-hole better ball tournament. What I mean by pair is you register with a partner and play as a team. I know because we are only playing nine holes, better ball means you and your partner will tee off and will check which position the balls are and you feel your partner ball is in a better position and you continue like that until you complete the hole.”

In addition to a trophy, the top three teams will secure funding for a charity of their choice with first, second and third winning $40,000, $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.

He noted that there was a draw yesterday and, in an effort to keep the competition flowing and avoid a cluster of people, the groupings were e-mailed to the players.

General Manager of the 36 Coldingen, East Coast Demerara-based Steel Company, Sandy Ramsundar, said that there is a rich history between Panko and the club, having been an avid golfer throughout the year. This admiration for the game has transcended into a number of collaboration between the two entitles.

Ramsundar, who is expected to show her golfing skills today, added that this was part of the company’s corporate responsibility to aid in the development of sports and raise awareness for the sport while contending that many persons are still unaware of the golf course in Guyana.

President of the Club, Patanjalee “Pur” Persaud, thanked the sponsors “for generously starting the year with the launch of this kind of tournament.”

Persaud pointed out that that the body is anticipating about 50 players which will probably climb higher since a lot of persons have shown interest.
