A family of seven were left counting their losses yesterday morning after a fire, suspected to have been caused by a mosquito coil, destroyed their Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara home.

The fire started around 4.09 am at Lot 205 Dazzle Housing Scheme.

The concrete structure was owned by James Osborne.

Six other persons, including Claudia Osborne, Johan Osborne and her son, Jarrell Toney, occupied the house.

Thirteen-year-old Toney sustained a fractured leg after he jumped from the verandah to escape the fire.

Nothing was saved from the fully furnished house.

Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo yesterday told Sunday Stabroek that investigation so far revealed that a mosquito coil, which was lit, accidently fell and caught on combustible items in one of the bedrooms of the house, resulting in the fire.

When this newspaper contacted the family yesterday, they were not in a position to comment on the fire. They said they were in search of a place to stay until they decide on their next move.
