Dear Editor,
Exxon ,with its worldwide footprint, is a source of what many oil-rich countries (without Exxon’s expertise) have described as negative in the main, but, can be a source of good for Guyana, if, Exxon themselves so choose. Corporate greed has no if’s nor but’s, it is rigidly straight forward and has become doctrine in its vast army of workers, many of whom come from the poor third world which includes Guyana. Many local commentators have tacitly accepted the “doctrine” and crafted their words around that, others have waded into Exxon’s chequered history, both being attempts to encourage and or dissuade excited/hapless citizens.
In the end big money wins, as the tentacles of ruthless corruption embrace our leaders (from both sides) and the rest, including the source-country, is history. If our leaders, at the “foot” of whom citizens lay their approval or blame for Guyana’s fortune/failure, can be imaginative and creative thinkers, even in the face of wanton abandon and unbridled lust, then and only then can they carve (eke) out a better life for long-suffering tax paying, hardworking Guyanese if they so choose…but greed, before it became “doctrine” is a human trait, which needs to be controlled…the onus for a higher standard of living for Guyana and Guyanese is on our leaders …It is not rigidly straight forward we agree…but…the oil belongs to us.
