Sports gets record allocation

A record $1.5B has been allocated for the sports sector for 2021 as part of the historic $383.1B National Budget which was read by Dr Ashni Singh on Friday in the National Assembly.

The sum is the largest allocation sports has received in history.

According to Dr. Singh, $915.5M was allocated for transforming community grounds into modern state-of-the-art sports facilities, starting  with Regions 2, 6 and 10.

A percentage of the $915.5M will also be used for adding lights to community grounds as well as the laying of synthetic tracks in the Ancient County of Berbice and the Mining Town of Linden.

Dr. Singh also noted, that $618M will be used for hosting of tournaments by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and to support sports federations/associations. 

Since 2021 is an Olympic year, a further $320M was budgeted for training of athletes and coaches as part of the sports academy.

Stabroek Sport reached out to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Charles Ramson Jr., for his reaction on the budgeted allocation, but a response up to press time proved futile. This publication will keep readers updated when a response is received.
