A soldier died on Monday night after he collided with a fellow motorcyclist while riding at Plum Park Sophia, Georgetown.

The deceased has been identified as Leroy Hercules, 28, of Lot 68 D’Uurban Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.

Tomica Edmondson, the fiancée of the deceased, told Stabroek News that Hercules left home sometime around 7 pm to visit a friend in the Plum Park, Sophia area.

She was later informed of the accident by the friend Hercules went to visit but initially did not think it was anything serious since Hercules was a careful rider, who looked out for other drivers not looking out for him. She also noted that she had also constantly reminded to him to be cautious on the road.

The woman stated that after receiving the news of the accident she quickly headed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where she was told Hercules had been taken in an unconscious state.

Hercules, who was an engineer, was stationed at the Coast Guard’s Floating Base in the Pomeroon.

He had returned home on Monday after spending some time away.

He was described as a lovable individual.

Edmondson stated that Hercules’ number one priority was caring for his two children, whom he wanted to always return home to.

Hercules is to be laid to rest next Wednesday and a candlelit vigil is to be held at the scene of the accident on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the other motorcyclist involved in the accident has since undergone surgery at the GPH and is said to be recovering in a stable condition.
