Omeshwar Sirikishun was yesterday elected president of the Port Mourant Cricket Club (PMCC) when the body held its annual general meeting on the steps of their main pavilion.

Sirikishun replaces Vickram Suebarran,  president since 2014, but will have the services of Leslie Solomon who returns to the role of vice-president and Daniel Samaroo as secretary. Jaipersaud Rawana was elected treasurer while Tenha Pooran will serve as assistant secretary/treasurer. The committee members are Chuck Bharrat, Charran Guman, Rampertab Ramnauth, Roopnarine Ramnauth and Harold Ramrattan.

Port Mourant was once deemed the pride of Berbice having produced the most international players from the county and dominated club cricket across the country.

However, in recent times the club has fallen from glory and is now unable to field first-division or second-division teams.

Having produced test cricketers the likes of John Trim, Basil Butcher, Rohan Kanhai, Alvin Kallicharran, Joe Solomon, Ivan Madray and Mahendra Nagamootoo, the club is also without an under-19 side.

Nevertheless, the club remains a positive place with a few shining lights in the Under-17 and Under-15 ranks in the form of Rampertab and Rampersaud Ramnauth and Salim Khan.

“I will do my best to work with you and ensure the development of Port Mourant Cricket Club. You have my honest and dedicated support,” the new president stated.

He added that while he brings 21 years of sports management, it was not about him but the collective effort needed to bring about the change necessary to steer the club in the right direction.

Present at the election was president of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster, who urged the new executives to work purposefully to bring back respect to the club.

Foster noted the efforts of Solomon, who he said has been instrumental in keeping cricket going at the club. Solomon, since 2018, has won two titles at the junior level and currently has a side in another semi-final.

The BCB boss encouraged the new executives to exemplify the kind of work ethic that has been synonymous with Solomon.

Foster told the gathering, “I am glad you turned out here today because this will determine your future at Port Mourant Cricket Club. As president of the Berbice Cricket Board, I will always be here for Port Mourant and I will try to assist the new executives as much as possible.”

He issued an invitation to the newly elected president and executives that “he is just a phone call away if you need any assistance.”

The BCB president said that in the coming week the club will benefit from a catching board as well as a scorebook and balls.
