Kick down the door bandits

Dear Editor,

I note that the media in Guyana has resorted to the term “home invasion” as opposed to what used to be “kick down the door bandits”. I am not sure what prompted the change in terminology. However, as a child of the late 70s and 80s Guyana, I thought the term adequately described the activity. Maybe we have become more civilized, and the criminals are no longer kicking in doors. However, the effects on the victims remains the same.

The killing of Anthony Cort as a result of a “home invasion” is testament to the brutality of the crime. Reggae artist Buju Banton in his hit song “Circumstances” stated, “As bad as badman use to be, Dem respect di father” meaning that even criminals had some humaneness and spirituality. However, the Sophia crime is unequivocal evidence that is no longer the case.

Yours faithfully,
