Students of the Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) recently received the spoils from the inaugural inter-schools golf championships.

The successful event was held last Friday with support from corporate sponsors Assuria General Insurance, Copa Airlines, Trophy Stall and Nexgen Global Marketing.

The winning team was accompanied by their Physical Education teachers Osafa Dos Santos and Trolston Embrack, along with their top male and female qualifier scorers Delton Cassiano and Subrina Balgobin and the national male school individual champion Jamal Campbell.

BEI dominated the first ever inter-school championships and were emphatic about their chances of retaining the top spot.

“We are working hard to develop our team and to bring at least 10 additional schools from Region 6 on-board with the programme in the next few weeks,” said Dos Santos.

This comes hard on the heels of Region 10’s launch of golf in all of their secondary schools with the support of Regional District Education Officer Nigel Richards, along with talks for possibly 8 schools in Region 3 to join Leonora Secondary in the golf programme.

According to Ishmael, “This is a fully COVID-19 compliant sport that promotes great qualities, focus and dedication for our kids and of course we, at the Ministry of Education, will rally behind the development of anything that promotes health, well-being, education and more importantly a fun, safe activity such as golf. With the help of Hussain and the Guyana Golf Association, we see this as becoming one of the major sports in Guyana very shortly.”

“Our sole focus has been making the sport accessible and affordable to everyone – no high membership fees, equipment cost or limited access. We provide a unique teaching system that guarantees that anyone will be able to hit the ball properly in less than 15 minutes,” said Hussain.
