A 23-year-old mason succumbed at a city hospital yesterday, less than two days after he was attacked and stabbed in Sophia following an argument over a bicycle.

Dead is Daniel Boutrin of Lot 157 Guyhoc Park, Georgetown.

He sustained a single stab wound to his chest during the incident which took place around 8.30am on Saturday in D Field, Sophia.

Boutrin was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he underwent two surgeries. He succumbed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) around 2.48 am yesterday.

The police are on the hunt for the suspect, a 25-year-old mason. Several efforts to locate him have since proved futile.

The suspect’s sister and Boutrin shared a relationship.

According to the police, enquiries revealed that on Saturday morning, Boutrin was at the suspect’s parents’ home when he and the suspect were involved in an argument.

The police said the argument stemmed from late last year when Boutrin reportedly borrowed the suspect’s bicycle and lost it.

The argument escalated during which both the suspect and Boutrin armed themselves. Boutrin had a cutlass while the suspect had a knife.

This caused the suspect’s parents to intervene shortly after following which the suspect left the premises.

“After some time, (Boutrin) left but as he was about to enter a taxi, he was confronted by the suspect who fired several stabs at him while (Boutrin)  in turn retaliated with some missed chops at the suspect,” the police explained.

After being stabbed, Boutrin ran for  a short distance and collapsed. The suspect made good his escape.

Speaking to Stabroek News last night, one of Boutrin’s sisters, who wished not to be named said since the incident, the family has been receiving conflicting information on what might have led to the stabbing.

The woman explained that Boutrin lived with the suspect and his family and he and the suspect “never get along”.

On Friday morning, she said she saw Boutrin passing by her house and he stopped by and told her that he and the suspect had a “lil” problem. “He (Boutrin) did passing through and by I living so close to the road, I shout to he. When he come, he come with a lil anger. He said man he going home because he girl brother (suspect) and he got a lil problem and the boy meking he enemy,” she said.

She also related that Boutrin told her that he won’t say anything “before certain things happen”. “By he (Boutrin) staying in the same house with them (suspect’s family), it bring a whole enemy and a whole vindictive thing like who puncture who bicycle and them kinda thing,” the woman added.

She said she warned her brother before he left her place and that was the last she saw him. “I say Daniel, it don’t pay to go in jail now because the Corona deh round and humble yuh self,” the woman said.

The following morning, she said she received a phone call informing her that Boutrin had been stabbed by the suspect.

Initially, she said she thought the injury was a minor one until Sunday morning when the family received a call from the hospital informing them that Boutrin’s condition was critical. “When we go down, he was on the life machine in the ICU and the doctor say is a 50/50 chance because of the stab that he get…..they said they ain’t know if he will make it. Just pray,” the woman further explained.

Shortly after waking up yesterday morning, the woman said she received the news of her brother’s passing.
