There is a significant difference between individual sugar worker incentives than its sum total

Dear Editor,

Please allow me some space in your column to express my frustration at the way some media houses in Guyana over-exaggerate whenever there is a payment for sugar workers. The W.P.I. was always there but it’s just that the incentives was not achieved and that was due to a number of other problems. The W.P.I incentives is a just a small set of payment made to sugar workers for achieving their weekly production. And mind you, these sugar workers have to work their hearts out, especially in the fields, whether there be sun or rain while other sectors were having increases in their wages and salaries. What they should have reported is that sugar workers weren’t given any increases for the past five years except for just a few dollars given to them just before the elections in 2020. So media houses need to explain how difficult it is for a sugar worker to earn a day’s pay rather than to say thousands of sugars workers to benefit from W.P.I.

Sincerely,

Anthony Welaidum
