Man dies at Timehri after hit by car driven by cop

A twenty-three-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a car driven by an off-duty lawman in the vicinity of Bounty Farm Limited, Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara on Saturday night.

Dead is Charles Williams of Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara. The accident occurred at approximately 8.20 pm after Williams  crossed the road.

According to the police, Williams was struck down by a white Toyota Allion bearing registration number PMM 4120. The car was at the time being driven by a 27-year-old police constable.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the police constable was proceeding south along the eastern side of the Timehri Public Road when Williams, who was walking north on the western side of the said road suddenly ran from west to east across the road.

Police yesterday related that the driver told investigators that he then applied brakes and pulled in a south-western direction to avoid a collision. The

driver told investigators that he was unsuccessful in avoiding a collision. As a result of the impact, Williams fell onto the bonnet  before landing on the roadway.

Williams was picked up by the police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious state and placed in motor van GYY 9933 before being rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead on arrival. Williams suffered injuries to his head and about the body.

The body was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary.

A breathalyzer test was administered on the driver of the motor car and revealed that there was no alcohol on his breath. The off-duty policeman is presently at the Timehri Police Station under close arrest as investigations continue.
