Moderate to heavy showers expected until Tuesday

Continuous moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms are expected across Guyana from today until Tuesday, the Hydrometeorological Service has advised.

In a special bulletin issued on Saturday, the Service said the forecasted conditions will likely lead to flooding in low lying areas and possible landslides over hilly areas. As a result, it advised that the public, including drivers and road users, take the necessary precautions against the expected conditions.

The Service explained that the conditions are due to a combination of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and a low to mid-level trough that is anticipated to develop over Guyana by late Saturday evening into early Sunday and likely to remain until Tuesday.

As a result, it said continuous moderate to heavy showers were expected across the country, with periodic high intensity rainfall events anticipated over areas in regions One to Six and Ten. Expected rainfall was estimated at between 50.0 mm to 100.0 mm within a 24-hour period, with the highest rainfall expected over regions One to Three on Sunday.

The Service said its National Weather Watch Centre will continue to closely monitor the event and issue bulletins as the need arises.
