Roy Dookun was the finest of men

Dear Editor,

I had a long and good conversation with my old friend Roy Dookun on his 88th birthday, a few days before he died. Long ago eight of us used to meet regularly to enjoy each other’s company and put the world to rights — Makepeace Richmond, Gig Delph, Bertie Taitt, Sonny Rodway, Neil Savory, Terry Lee, Roy and I. Now he and I were left. We remembered our friends, we recalled old times.  We laughed a lot. It was good.

Roy was a dear friend, my oldest friend, more than 60 years have gone. He brightened my life all that time. We won many great tennis matches together. We had a lot of fun. He was the finest of men, the staunchest of friends.  He was kind to everyone. I will miss him very much. May he rest in peace and honour.

Sincerely,

Ian McDonald
