Canefield tractor operator, 55, dies after sudden collapse

A Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice man died on Thursday evening after collapsing at home, leaving his family in a state of shock and with unanswered questions.

Dead is Devendra Brijlall, also known as ‘Kenrick’, 55, a tractor operator, of New Area Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice.

His wife, Netty Seenanand explained that her husband was perfectly fine before he collapsed on Thursday evening.

“We sit down on the bridge there and deh gaff about half an hour and I was feeling lil hungry so me tell my granddaughter make some tea for us and when we finish drinking we tea he come in and say he hungry that let me hot lil food, so he go bathe and come back and he sit down and eat heartily and then he go washroom and he come back. Me did still eating and he tell my granddaughter he a feel bad and he go outside go vomit but nothing na come out”, she said.

According to the woman, he then requested some more tea, “but by time that, me hear something fall down and when we run go he deh ground.” She said, he was shivering when she picked him up.

“Me say like this man get wind and the wind lock am off so me start rub he back”, the emotional woman relayed to Stabroek News.

The man was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead moments after arriving. “When we meet the doctor he tell me he pupil flare and that if he pupil na been flare them would a try with he, so me done know then them a tell me that he dead.”

While breaking into tears, Seenanand said, “Nothing na been wrong with am. Me na see nothing, he na show sign of nothing. Me strong, strong husband gone go dead. He na sick with nothing.”

The family is now in a state of shock and is awaiting a post-mortem examination which is expected to be done sometime tomorrow to answer their questions as to the cause of death.

Two Saturdays ago around 11 am, the couple received the Covid–19 vaccine. The woman said, they were told not to smoke or drink within the 24 hours after receiving the vaccine.

She said that her husband who is both a smoker and drinker drank on Sunday afternoon. “When we tell he na drink he tell we the 24 hours done and me can’t say if he smoke but he does smoke but the injection had me drowsy so me go sleep.”

She added, “Me tell the nurse that he does drink and smoke that she must warn he and she warn he. He drink Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday he na drink.”

Further, the woman said, after receiving the vaccine the only side effect the man had was minor diarrhoea.

Brijlall was a well-known man in his community. He was described as being extremely kind and quiet.
