A fisherman who faces two trafficking of narcotics charges was yesterday remanded because he was unable to provide the court with a fixed place of abode.

Daryck Christopher, 29, appeared at the George-town Magistrate’s Court where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the two trafficking of narcotics charges to him. It is alleged that on April 3, at Rosemary Lane, Tiger Bay, Georgetown, he had in his possession 140 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.  It is also alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had 12 grammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

After denying both charges, he was remanded to prison because he could not provide to the court a fixed address in Guyana. He was represented by attorney-at-law Darren Wade, who told the court that Christopher is a fisherman who resides in Para-maribo, Suriname. He added that the man is visiting Guyana to attend the funeral of his brother Dale Christopher who was killed in a shooting in February. He further told the court that the man is currently staying at a place located at Camp Street but he did not know the exact address.

Wade also explained to the court that Christopher was visiting his father when the police arrested him and brought the allegations against him. He further said that the yard has multiple houses and that the police found the narcotics and arrested his client without being questioned and without a thorough investigation into the ownership of the narcotics.

However the Police Prosecutor told the court that when Christopher was arrested, he had the narcotics in a bag which he was holding in his hands. The prosecutor said that according to the facts, Christopher was sitting on a bed in the home which was searched.

The prosecutor further objected to the man being placed on bail and stated that there are no special circumstances for bail to be applied. He also reminded the court that Christopher could not provide a local address to the court.

He was subsequently remanded until April 21.
