Miner found in river died of strangulation – autopsy

Avinash Fernandes, the miner whose body was found floating in the Arakaka River, North West District (NWD), Region One during last week died as a result of asphyxiation due to compression to the neck, consistent with manual strangulation, an autopsy stated.

Deputy Director of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit, Stan Gouveia confirmed the findings of the autopsy.

The autopsy was performed on Tuesday by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.

A police investigation is ongoing. No arrest has yet been made.

Fernandes, 20 of Mabaruma Com-pound, NWD, Region One was reported missing on April 5th. 

He was last seen at his camp site at 13 Miles Trail Line Backdam, Arakaka.

At the time, Fernandes was dressed in a black, white and red jersey, light grey long pants and black slippers. His lifeless body was discovered last Thursday.

In a press release, Regional Commander, Superintendent Khalid Mandall had confirmed that the discovery was made by a party of policemen and Fernandes’ employer.

There was no visible mark of violence on the body, Mandall added.
