Two charged with fraud over power of attorney

Two persons were yesterday separately charged with fraud in relation to powers of attorney and following not-guilty pleas they were granted bail.

Coretta Baird of Lot 1749 Façade, Parika, East Bank Essequibo was before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court when she was placed on $60,000 bail.

It is alleged that on September 22, 2020 at the Guyana Revenue Authority, Camp Road with intent to defraud, she uttered to Marlon Baburam, one Limited Power of Attorney #1128/2019 in order to be used as genuine, knowing same to be forged.

It is also alleged that between August 1, 2020 and September 22, 2020, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she forged a Limited Power of Attorney dated February 5, 2020, purporting to show that it was issued by Cledwin Barnwell, knowing same to be forged

Following not-guilty pleas on both charges, Baird was granted bail and the matter was adjourned until April 26.

Meanwhile, Paul Basdeo, 69, of Lot 126 Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara was placed on $60,000 bail after he denied a fraud charge as well.

It is alleged that on the 27th March, 2019 at Charlotte Street, with intent to defraud, he forged a Limited Power of Attorney, purporting to show it was issued by Ramdass, knowing same to be forged. The matter was adjourned until April 27.
