This week’s IYFG spotlight falls on Damian ‘farmer man’ Bacchus. Two decades ago he left masonry behind and decided to ‘look to the land.’ There was a time too when his search for gainful employment took him to Barbados. It didn’t work out so he returned home. Thereafter he turned his fullest attention to farming, plying his trade – on lands which his father before him had also cultivated – at the New Friendship Land Farmers’ Cooperative Society. situated at Friendship. Tbhese days, David says, marketing has become a more formidable challenge. Once his fruit and vegetables are reaped he places them on a bicycle fitted with a tray. Most of his customers are located on the route between home and farm.   He is, he says, open to bringing more wholesale and retail customers on board.

The thirty eight year-old lives with his mother at Samantha Point, Grove, on the East Bank Demerara.

With a 13 acre farm, Damon cultivates a number of food crops including coconut, calaloo and pepper. He also grows cherry.
