The boat and engine that were stolen from the Toshao of Chinese Landing, in Region One, have been recovered at Bartica, where two residents were arrested in connection with the crime.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the stolen property of Toshao Orin Fernandes was found at Byderabo Village, Bartica, Essequibo River.

An investigation has revealed that on April 21, a female resident of the community and a male accomplice allegedly took the boat and engine to a boat builder’s workshop to change the colour of the vessel.

Following this revelation, ranks proceeded to the woman’s residence, where the partially disassembled 200hp Yamaha outboard engine was recovered. She was subsequently arrested and questioned. She reportedly then related that on April 20, two of her friends brought the boat and engine to her and she helped them to sell it.

The police stated that both the woman and the boat builder are in custody at the Bartica Police Station.

Police had previously said that the boat and engine, valued at a total of $4.5 million, were stolen sometime between 6 pm on Sunday and 5 am on Monday at Chinese Landing. Fernandes had secured his boat with a rope at the back of his home, about 100 feet away in a creek. However, on Monday, Fernandes made checks and observed that his boat and engine were missing.

The GPF stated that the man immediately made checks in and around Chinese Landing and he was informed by others of the name of the accused who allegedly cut the rope used to secure the boat and had been seen heading towards the Waini River with the vessel.
