Belle West man dies after injured in confrontation

A Belle West, Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara vendor yesterday afternoon succumbed to injuries he sustained during a heated confrontation with another resident who has since been arrested and placed into police custody.

The deceased man has been identified as Omkar Kishundyal, 64.

Police last night said that at about 2.30 pm Kishundyal, while being armed with a hammer, went to the home of the suspect, highly intoxicated and verbally abused the suspect’s father. The suspect’s father according to the police was contracted to execute some works at Kishundyal’s home.

During his verbal abuse, Kishundyal, police said, barged into the suspect’s yard and launched an attack on him, lashing him about his body with the hammer.

Attempting to save himself from the blows, the suspect armed himself with a chair.  However, Kishundyal held on to the chair and the two began to wrestle.

“The suspect released the chair and armed himself with a cutlass which was nearby while the victim retrieved the hammer and rushed back into the suspect,” the police said.

According to the police, the suspect said he raised the cutlass to bar the hammer and Kishundyal then sustained a cut to his right hand. It was at this point, Kishundyal began to retreat from the suspect’s premises. He collapsed some 600 feet away.  He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was examined and later died.

Police said that while the suspect was at the Wales Police Station filing a report he was arrested and is assisting with investigations.

Kishundyal’s body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy.
