Bandits shoot moneychanger in America St robbery

A moneychanger was shot yesterday when he was attacked by two men on America Street, in Georgetown.

David Wilson, 49, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was robbed of some $600,000 in cash during the attack, which was carried out by two men, who approached on an XR motorbike that did not have a number plate.

According to a Guyana Police Force statement, Wilson was standing on the pavement along America Street around 11.30am when the suspects turned into the street from Avenue of the Republic and he approached them, raising his hands in a gesture to inquire whether they wanted to change money.

However, the pillion rider jumped off the motorcycle and whipped out a handgun and demanded that Wilson hand over the cash.

Wilson was reportedly reluctant and the gunman discharged a round to his upper left leg. Wilson handed over the cash and the robbers rode away.

Wilson was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital.
