At approximately 11:58 am yesterday, the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) experienced a shutdown when an excavator caused an incident with the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) transmission network.
A release from GPL said that the excavator was traversing the corridor with the L3 Transmission line which links the Golden Grove Substation and the Garden of Eden Power Plant.
Following an inspection of the Transmission Line, a tree was discovered in contact with the line causing one conductor to burn through. The incident resulted in the loss of approximately 20 MW of generation from the Garden of Eden Power Plant, the release said.
At approximately 12:15 hrs incremental power restoration started in Demerara and continued until all areas in Demerara and Berbice were fully repowered at approximately 15:36 hrs.
