Latest GPL shutdown saw loss of 40 MW

The Guyana Power and Light’s (GPL) latest shutdown in the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) on Saturday saw the loss of approximately 40 megawatts of power and some consumers were without electricity for one hour and 45 minutes.

In a statement yesterday, GPL said that at approximately 6.56 pm on Saturday the DBIS experienced a shutdown due to a trip on two Transmission Lines, the L1 and L4,  which link the Company’s Sophia Substation to the Golden Grove Substation and the Garden of Eden Power Plant respectively.

The trip triggered the protection for the 69kV transformer at the Garden of Eden Power Plant, resulting in the loss of approximately 40 Megawatts of generation, GPL said.

Operations began immediately to restore power to affected customers. At approximately 6.20 pm, incremental restoration commenced in Demerara and continued until all areas in Demerara and Berbice were repowered at approximately 7:41 pm.

“Our Company remains cognisant of the inconveniences associated with unplanned service interruptions and continues to work towards minimising these outages”, GPL said.
